The Southwestern Junior Foundation honors the memory of Captain Michael Roach, who passed away on June 2, 2026, at the age of 88.
Michael dedicated his life to education, mentorship, and sailing. After a 33-year career as a guidance counselor with the Grossmont Union High School District, he became a licensed captain, teaching sailing from basic instruction through advanced cruising and sharing his passion for the sport with countless students.
A longtime member of Southwestern Yacht Club, Michael was a respected racer, skipper, and leader. For more than four decades, he successfully raced his beloved boats, Jezebel and Poco Loco, served on the PHRF Board, and held several leadership roles within the Club. He was known for welcoming junior sailors aboard his racing crews, encouraging and mentoring the next generation of sailors.
Michael's kindness, humility, competitive spirit, and dedication to youth sailing left a lasting impact on our Club and community. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who had the privilege of sailing alongside him.
In lieu of flowers, Michael's family has requested that donations be made in his memory to the Southwestern Junior Foundation, helping continue his legacy of supporting young sailors.
